A question about an external hard drive enclosure (usb type)?

March 6, 2010 - 9:31 pm

Does the drive that goes in it need to be the same power or rpm and GB as the internal hard drive, so as to run correctly?

Is it ok if the external is IDE and the internal is SATA?

Thanks.

makes no difference. Plug it in and use it.

The drive has to match the enclosure - you can’t put a SATA drive in an IDE enclosure.

To the computer, they’re all USB drives. Size, speed, type, power, RPM, make - none of that matter.

it doesnt matter about the internal drive, as long as your version of windows can handle the size of the drive, some of the older windows versions have limmits.

also the enclosure it’s self will have a size limmit and it should tell you befor purchase.

you dont have to have the same form factor (ide or sata) as the internal drive. but it’s better to go with Sata because you can get drives with more space, and they are much cheaper as IDE hard drives arnt being made any more and so are quite expensive, and have size limmits.
