mains transformer in electronic projects part 2

The importance of a galvanic coupled/galvanic connected (iron) enclosure for an electronic (audio) device to prevent hum, cracking sounds, disfunctioning and strange other fenomena of your home brew radio or audio amplifier. The reason is to equal out possible potential differences between parts of the enclosure. Potential differencies can lead to small (tiny) Voltages and resistances that can disturb the good functioning of electronics. So solder all the parts of the enclosure together by (a) wire(s), if they are made from separate sheets of metal. Also on connections made with bolts and nuts potentials can occur when they get corroded and in that case “transfer” resistances can build up on which small Voltages occur. So soldering (100 Watt soldering device) is the best way to make the connections in the earth-circuit. Enclosures of aluminium can give problems, because some types of aluminium have a tightly closed oxide skin with a high resistance on which it is difficult to break through, connecting the earth wire. Aluminium cannot be soldered, so you have to use bolts and nuts (use a sharp ring under the bolt/nut to punch through the oxide layer). Measure the ohms resistance in the earth circuit (wires to the earth point of the enclosure) if you construct an aluminium enclosure for an electronic device.
