Using my old hard drive in an external enclosure?

This one is for all of you hard drive experts out there, I know there are similar questions out there, but I can’t seem to find the right answer.
Basically I’m rebuilding my computer, and am getting a new SATA hard drive to replace the old IDE drive. What I’m wondering is, can I take my old IDE drive (without formatting) and put it in a USB 2.0 enclosure, and still have it functional to work as an external hard drive for transferring data to the new drive.
Yes. Set the external drive to master. You will need to reinstall your OS, but your files will be accessible.
