I need advice on purchasing an external hard drive enclosure?

I have a Compaque NC6000 that died and I need to recover files and then convert the drive into a backup drive. I looked at ones offered online but I have no idea what characteristics are important. Prices range from as low as $5 up to $75. I have no idea what is essential and what I can do without. How do I know if the unit is compatible with my hard drive? Want to keep purchase price as low as possible.
When did you buy your computer? look inside check if it is IDE or SATA and IDE is like this with this data cable http://www.gshop.com.au/images/ide_133_cable.jpg And SATA is this http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2005/11/23/pc_interfaces_101/hdd_sata_connected.jpg
