How to clone and upgrade your hard drive - Super Duper

August 23, 2009 - 6:35 am

In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to upgrade your hard drive via cloning through a program called super duper. This will backup everything including your Macintosh HD. It will not backup your windows partition (BOOTCAMP)

For this tutorial, you only need the free version of super duper. No need to purchase the full version. (i do recommend purchasing the full version - This software is awesome)

You will also need an external enclosure to work with your new hard drive. Please look at my previous tutorial how to know which external enclosure you need to purcahse. Heres the link

Run Super Duper. Copy your existing hard drive in your mac, to your new external hard drive you made (the drive containing your hd upgrade) .

Takes about an hour and a half to two hours for the copying process. From there, swap the hard drives, Consult your mac manual how to remove and install your hard drive. Turn on your computer and thats it.

Steve i have a question for you.. i am planning to buy a mac for university this saturday and am puzzled.. i wanted to go for top model macbook pro 13-inch which is as you know 2.53ghz, 4gb ram, 250 HDD and it costs £987 ($1,670) because i get educational discount.. anyways if i get lower model with 2.26ghz and upgrade it to 250hdd and 4gb ram then it will be £876 ($1,485) will i really notice the difference between the two? and is it worth paying extra $185 for it? thanks

    RAM and hard drives …
RAM and hard drives are user-replaceable. Upgrading them yourself does not void the warranty. However if you attempt to install them yourself and damage your Mac in the process, that damage would not be covered by Apple Care. See Chapter 3 of the MBP user manual.
