external enclosure with a SATA hard drive be supported by a my computer?

When using a computer which supports IDE hard drives but has no SATA input plugs, would it work if I bought an external enclosure that supports SATA and plugged it into the computer via the USB port?

Or will the computer not recognize the hard drive?

I’m not sure if there’s a difference in the way a SATA drive formats or if it’s just the transfer rate.

You can put your HD into an external case that’s made for SATA drives and use USB to connect to it and everything will work just fine. Your OS won’t care if the drive is SATA or IDE and you can format the drive any way you want. Fat32, NTFS etc.

If you want your hard drive to be portable then use SATA-USB or if you want it permanantly inside your pc then get a SATA IDE card/ SATA PCI card.
