#207 Q&A - External HDD Enclosure

My birthday is coming up soon and I need a good external hard drive for personal back up use. It needs to be under $110 and I was looking at one on amazon for $99 and it was made by Toshiba and it’s micro sized and portable.
Would brand would you recommend for personal back up that is easy to set up, fast transfer, and won’t crash as much?

Buy the Antec MX-1 + HDD like Samsung F1 or WD Green Edition !
The internal cooling system of the MX-1 gives you astonishing low HDD temperatures compared to a regular passive enclosure and it has USB and e-Sata interfaces. I’ve reviewed one and I highly recommend it. You’ll not regret it, temperatures are very important for HDD reliability and that combination is the best you can buy.
One of my colleagues had one of those “WD My Book” and the HDD just died a few weeks ago.

Yup. I heard Seagate sent out a bad batch of HDD”s recently. Bad quality control on their part. My WD Caviar Black is doing real good and I expect it will for a while to come.

I had a 500GB …
I had a 500GB Seagate 7200.11 drive and it worked for a week so I copy all my files to it and and about 3 hours later it died lost everything. Got a WD and it been working for over 2 months now no problems!

not sure about everyone’s opinion on this, but if you’re getting enclosure alone, be sure to get one that has a power button, solely, because you mention that you’re getting it as a backup which will not require it being on all the time.

I’m using an external 1TB My Book Essential Edition i’ve had it for about 1 year now and i have my computer on 24/7 with my utorrent downloads on the external so its working hard all the time and i havent had a single problem yet. So i rate this 100% kick product. :>

2,5″ hdd are much more expensive that their big and heavy 3,5″ counterparts. Also, 2,5″ is for people who want to have their mp3s, pics videos and whatnot portable, gamer or not.
By the way, a gamer would NEVER have his games on an external hard drive. raid0 only
