What are the differences bt External Hard Drives and External hard drive enclosures?

October 16, 2010 - 5:15 pm

My computers memory is not that big and i would like to expand the memory and I want a external hard drive but while i was browsing websites for external hard drives i saw a external hard drive enclosure. Now what is the difference between then and why is one so much cheaper than the other? And what are their functions? Like what does it do.

Let’s say you have and older, broken computer. You could pull the internal hard drive out, and put it inside an enclosure. Now you have an external drive, and you’re recycling your old drive, which is obviously more cost effective. The "enclosure" does NOT include an actual drive. It’s just a box to put a hard drive in, and make it USB.

One has build in hard drive and no drive in the hard drive enclosures. Both use USB to the computer.

    There are couple more choices:
    1) Adapter with power supply to make any drive external to USB port using IDE or Sata drives I use this to move data from old drive to new system without opening the computer.

    2) BlacX adapter which takes any Sata drive to make it external drive. The drive slides into a slot and outport to a USB port. There external power supply. Easy to change drives. I have two drives for this adapter of backups.

I like above options because I do not have open a case to remove the drive. Option 1 will work with my DVD drive so I can update my mini computer with no DVD build in.

The cheaper of all is the adapter with power supply, I seen them on Ebay for less than $10.00 but they are pure junk. For good one you will pay around $15 to $20. The BlacX adapter around $20 good for backups. The case get one with good aluminum case to carry away the heat. Price around $35. The external hard drives are nice but no worth extra cost and I had trouble with them.
If you have extra drive laying around any adapters will work just match your Sata or IDE drives.
