How accurate is winISD for subwoofer enclosures?

February 14, 2012 - 11:11 am 1 Comment

Just wondering if any of you good people out there have used the program and then measured different results than what was projected? As you surely know, certain enclosures can involve quite a bit of time and money, and since it is a free program, I wonder sometimes just how much I should trust it.

winISD is ok. WinISD pro is much better.

How do you make hard plastic enclosures for electronics?

January 17, 2012 - 1:48 am 3 Comments

I want to create a small hard plastic case for a little project. I know you can buy plastic enclosures online but I want the case to fit snugly around the PCB and to be as small as possible.

Use Epoxy and fiber glass sheet.

Is it possible to run 2 separate 12in sub enclosures to one amp?

Atrend E12D B Box Series 12-Inch Dual Sealed Bass Boxes is awesome for a 2000 Honda Accord. It’s made out of really good material (1" MDF) and it sounds great even with cheap Boss subs. If you’re looking for a sealed box for 2 12" subs, this is the box you want. Can’t beat the price or quality.

There is no reason it should not be accurate. I think it’s more a features issue than an accuracy issue. You are probably asking this in the wrong place, the AVS Forum DIY section would probably be better. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=155

I don’t do much with box speakers anymore and virtually never with ported. Just don’t have a use for them! A simple pocket calculator is all you need for sealed systems or open baffle systems. The tools you do need are LspCAD and some sort of measurement system. I use Arta with an Earthworks M-30 microphone but a cheaper option would be this… http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=390-790 It uses a modified Panasonic mic element that is pretty close in quality to my M-30. I haven’t tried this system but I’m familiar with the guy that designed it and it should be very good.

You’ll have to check with the DIY’ers on the AVS Forum about box modeling software. I know Bass Box Pro is a popular one. I’ve been doing almost exclusively open baffle for 16 ~ 17 years and have little or no interest in conventional box speakers. They do still have their applications, not sure that’s true of ported systems but I suppose that’s a matter of taste.

Are there any books that discuss people jumping into zoo enclosures?

September 9, 2011 - 10:51 am 3 Comments

There are lots of website references (usually newspapers from the day the event happened) of people entering bear enclosures and getting killed, but does anyone know of any books that mention this?

Here’s a book about Binky the Polar Bear:
http://www.amazon.com/Binkys-Trophy-Story-Alaskan-Polar/dp/0965420019
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?pq=binky+the+polar+bear&hl=en&sugexp=gsis,i18n%3Dtrue&cp=25&gs_id=g&xhr=t&q=binky+the+polar+bear+book&rlz=1R2DKUS_enUS364&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1344&bih=705&wrapid=tljp131489070161408&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=2293194181545091958&sa=X&ei=0qNfTrrEAsGesQLDjeUI&sqi=2&ved=0CEAQ8wIwBQ#

If you want a quick review of Binky’s story, look at this article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binky_(polar_bear)

Somebody actually made an amateur video while it was happening:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wGbCNDw-m0

Note that this woman had to climb over two (TWO!) fences to get that close to Binky. She was injured but not killed, and she later admitted that it was colossally stupid to do that and that Binky was not to blame. Binky kept her shoe as a toy.

What is a good cheap online store to buy reptile enclosures?

August 16, 2011 - 2:16 am 4 Comments

i want to buy a cheap reptile enclosure that will be shipped to my door, would prefer if it came in a package with lights and all in it ready to go. doesn’t worry me if its from over sea’s or anywhere in the world, and i dont care about ebay so please dont tell me to go to ebay. thanks

To be honest, if you’re looking for inexpensive enclosures, you should build it yourself (you can have the materials shipped for free from certain companies). Tanks are outrageously expensive, especially if you’re looking for something bigger than typical. There are plenty of sites and vids to help you learn, but without knowing what type of animal you have, I can’t do much for you. I can tell you that it’s easier than it sounds will depending on details, won’t take long (small and basic maybe 30min tops, huge and elaborate, maybe a few hours). The biggest issue for you would be price. anything shipped to your door, ready to go (especially if from overseas) will cost some money.

Are downfiring subwoofer enclosures tuned differently that regular up firing woofers?

July 31, 2011 - 3:38 am 1 Comment

I’m making boxes for a JL 8” sub and I was wondering if I could just make a lip around the side of the box that mounts the sub while still using the dimensions provided in the manual for the actual box. If the XMax for the sub is .39”, would a 1.5” lip be adequate? Also, what is a good resource for DIY sub enclosure building for dummies?

I’ve made multiple down-firing sealed enclosures for my car and haven’t changed anything with respect to airspace. 1.5" is probably adequate…I would recommend leaving about an inch between the floor and the sub when the sub is at it’s max excursion. the12volt.com is the best DIY resource I have found.

What type of subwoofers and enclosures should I get?

July 27, 2011 - 1:20 am 3 Comments

I have an 01 sunfire 4dr sedan. I have about 37" wide and 12 1/2" high. What Subs should I look at getting? and what enclosures? I have to make sure they fit obviously, thanks.

i have two jl audio 8w7 subwoofers and i couldnt be happier for your car you should prob go with 8’s or 10’s whichever you prefer anything jl is really good and so are kicker and alpine. the enclosure depends on what you are looking for the ported ones put less stress on the subs and can help them last longer and usually make them a little louder so that is up to you.hope this helps

What is the difference between ported and sealed subwoofer enclosures?

July 23, 2011 - 12:36 am 4 Comments

Im looking for a subwoofer enclosure for my two 12" 1000W subs. What is the difference between ported and sealed subwoofer enclosures and which one would you recommend? -Thanks

Be sure that your subs can be used both ways. Some subs can only use 1 style box. As far as the difference, ported is louder but has less of a range, sealed has a larger range and tighter bass but not as loud

How hard vs. profitable is it to make reptile and amphibian enclosures?

May 11, 2011 - 2:18 am 3 Comments

Ok so I am thinking about making custom cages for reptiles and amphibians. I do have wood working experience and have worked with plexi glass and screen before. I am trying to decide whether or not making it my primary job would be worth it. I live in central North Carolina and really am unsure about how to ship the cages I make. Any information from experienced persons would be appreciated.

It makes a fantastic hobby, but the demand is not high enough to turn it into a great, profitable career. That is, unless you start working with zoo’s to make very large enclosures.

Many people do enjoy extravagant, beautiful and natural looking terrariums. Depending on what is used in it, and how large the terrariums are will determinate the price, which will usually be anywhere from a few hundred to a few (but usually not much more than one or two) thousand.

There is a lot of research to do when getting into this business. You need to first know what most people are looking for, what size it usually is, what terrain it is, and what plants to use (if any) that won’t harm their animals. You will also need to know a lot about filter systems and how to integrate it into the terrariums in case the terrarium you are making needs to be flooded in areas with water. You also have to work on your design quite thoroughly to make it easy to clean, and still functional.

In short, it’s a whole lot of fun and very educational, but it’s best off left as a hobby unless you want to do massive enclosures for Zoo’s and Public Aquariums.
