How do I hook up an old hard drive using enclosure to my laptop?

February 26, 2010 - 8:25 pm 1 Comment

The drive came from an old desktop and is an IDE (wide grey connector). I have a rocketfish hard drive enclosure.

I was hoping to reformat the drive by connecting it to my laptop then connect it to my desktop as an extra drive.

It’s connected to my laptop using the usb and the hard drive enclosure. Should it show up as a removable drive? How do I reformat it?

yes, it should shows up as a removable drive, you format it by right click on it and choose format.

why don’t you install it a secondary drive on you Desktop then format it?

after installing it, Right click on my computer > select manage> select Disk Management, make sure you are at the correct HDD and format it

again make sure you are at the correct HDD, you have been warned

February 17, 2010 - 3:01 am 2 Comments

I am looking to buy a water dragon.
I am looking to build my own enclosure or buy a CHEAP one.
I am on a semi low budget.
Thanks.
I want to make a enclosure for a water dragon.
The enclosure i want is 6-7 feet high 4-5 feet in lenght and 3 feet in depth.
Im not looking to spend alot. I would like to spend about $150-170.
(without the lights, heating and all that)

You can shop on craigslist.org and there people sell things that they don’t need or can’t keep anymore and you can get tanks and animals for free in the pet section.

Can I transfer my RAID hard drives from one enclosure to another?

January 20, 2010 - 7:06 pm 2 Comments

Details:
I have a 1 TB storage RAID enclosure, that uses e-sata cables to connect to pc.

I have one light out on the RAID device and was wondering if I need to buy another RAID enclosure and put the harddrives in the new one.

Will this work?

It depends on what type of RAID is being used. If it’s mirrored (RAID 1), then it should work. If it’s striped (RAID 0), it might not. I would just buy the same brand/model of the enclosure if possible. Backup your stuff on it before hand just to be on the safe side.

What exactly does an External Enclosure do for my laptop?

January 17, 2010 - 10:26 pm 2 Comments

Is it an alternative to an external hard drive? Because I need more space to work with on my Toshiba Laptop. And what exactly does an external enclosure do?

An external enclosure is to store a hard drive that connects to the outside of the laptop.

An enclosure first of all looks good, protects from shock and offers a little protection from other types of damage like accidental watter spills.

I prefer USB Thumb drives, being a good alternative for those every day things like storing music.

Where can I find a replacement hard drive enclosure for my external hard drive?

December 29, 2009 - 2:26 pm 5 Comments

The specs on the hard drive:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.1
320G
Ultra ATA

I don’t know anything more about it. I need the replacement enclosure as well as all necessary cables.

You can find these at major computer hardware sites like NewEgg.Com, ZipZoomFly.com, TigerDirect, CompUsa or even Amazon.

What you need to know is that the enclosure must support 3.5" drives (your format) and IDE (also known as PATA NOT SATA). These kits usually have both the power connection 4-pin molex and
IDE connection ribbon cable).

Good luck

P.S. For example a random search turns up 38 matching items on Newegg.

What is the difference between an external hard drive and an external hard drive enclosure?

December 24, 2009 - 4:09 pm 5 Comments

I want to buy an external hard drive for my computer, and one of the products I found was an external hard drive enclosure. Is that the same thing as an external hard drive? If not, please explain the differences. Thanks.

external hard drive enclosure is not the same as external hard drive.

you can buy an external hard drive and plug it into your PC through a USB connection. once that is done you are ready to save files to it.

an external hard drive enclosure is just a case, an empty case with cables, there is no hard drive in it (it’s only an enclosure) you have to buy a hard drive separately. usually these are used if say you have a spare hard drive from an old computer and no space in your new one. you buy a case and stick the hard drive into that, you then plug it all into the usb port.

you should stick to external hard drives (not enclosures).

How to install a subwoofer into an enclosure?

December 11, 2009 - 7:45 am 1 Comment

Hey guys! I currently have a 12" Kicker CVR in a ported box installed in my car. The box is taking up way too much room of my trunk, so I am going to get a custom box built. I was wondering what are the steps in removing the sub from the current enclosure and putting it in the new one? Is it difficult? What exactly needs to be done? Any help would be great!

usually just like 8 philips screws, that the most common type used to put a sub in. once you take the sub out disconnect the wires, there will be 4, they are just little push pins.. push up and the wire will come out, one by one.

How can i make a tortoise indoor enclosure more entertaining for the tortoise?

November 17, 2009 - 9:34 am 1 Comment

Hello, i have a 3 year old Mediterranean Spur thighed tortoise ( Scientific name: Testudo Graeca )
Anyway it is cooler because we are going into winter so she is inside she has a heat lamp UVB etc eats 100% weed diet ( dandilions chicory etc ) in her enclosure now she has a tray of live grass, pebals branches, basking rock and a "reptile" bowl of water, How can i make her Enclosure more intesting??

Thank you

Several possibilities.

Play with the food-
- bundle and hang plants for the torts to eat
- offer edible flowers
- if they eat pelleted or cubed hay, or Mazuri pellets, place some in odd corners of the habit
- raise some edible plants in low trays. Rotate the trays in so they can graze on them

Give them toys-
- some tortoises bump and move balls, like practice golf balls, Whiffle balls, etc.
- offer it things to climb over- ramps, bridges, hillsides, mostly buried pots on their sides, etc.
- offer different surfaces to walk on. Some people offer shallow trays of soil, pebbles, sand, etc. they can rotate out to clean or change up.

Let them hide-
- Hiding places in planted areas
- warm end humid hide
- cool end drier hide

(Calculus) Finding the length and width of the enclosure that is the most economical to construct?

November 3, 2009 - 10:57 am 2 Comments

A fence is to be built to enclose a rectangular area of 280 square feet. The fence along three sides is to be made of material that costs 6 dollars per foot, and the material for the fourth side costs 15 dollars per foot. Find the length L and width W (with W<= L) of the enclosure that is most economical to construct.

Perimeter = 2L + 2W
Area = LW = 280.
Cost = 12L + 6W + 15W or 12L + 21W (if one width is $15)
It does not matter which is L or W yet.
For what values of L and W is cost a minimum?
cost = 12L + 21 x 280/L = 12L + 5880/L
Differentiate this and equate to zero.
You get: 12L^2 = 5880 or L^2 = 490.
L = 22.134. Thus W = 280/L = 12.650
Minimum cost = 12 x 22.134 + 21 x 12.650 dollars
Minimum cost = $531.26. Length = 22.134 ft, width = 12.65 ft.

You can check that any other combination of L and W will cost more than this. e.g. try L = 20, W = 14. Area = 280 and cost = $534.
L = 28, W = 10 gives cost = $546 and so on.

Proper way to fold an enclosure envelope inside of another envelope without changing envelope sizes?

October 29, 2009 - 7:50 pm 1 Comment

Is there a proper way to fold an enclosure envelope inside of another envelope without changing envelope sizes? Folding in half length-wise, width-wise, or into quarters? What is the accepted method for a professional letter mailing?

For a standard business envelope I believe you’d fold it in thirds.
