i want to use pressurized dry nitrogen to insulate elelctronics contained in an enclosure. will this work?

August 16, 2009 - 6:15 am 3 Comments

i have a piece of electronic equipment in an elclosure being used in a high ambient temperature environment and have the ability to pressurize it with dry nitrogen, with a small amount of leakage so some nitrogen will be flowing through the enclosure. initail thought was to keep contaniments out of the enclosure but will this also insulate the electronics from the high external environmental temperatures?

First of all, are you sure you really want to INSULATE the electronic components? Electronic devices usually generate heat of their own. I’ve seen plenty of electronic devices that were either permanently or temporarily disabled because they were too well insulated. (Note: "too well insulated" means the same thing as "inadequate cooling.")

You say the nitrogen will be flowing? That’s a good thing. Don’t think of the nitrogen as an insulator. Think of it as a coolant. If the environment is really hot, you may want to add insulation both to the enclosure, and to the nitrogen supply line. You might want to monitor the temperature inside the box and adjust the flow rate as needed to keep the box running cool.
