How do I use an external hard drive?

March 28, 2010 - 9:08 am

I recieved a a external hard drive recently as a gift. I just don’t know how to use it. It came with a smaller- than- usual CD but i put it in my computer and it wont start up by itself. I have a 3.5" HDD Smart Drive Enclosure by Bytecc. It’s also aluminum if that means anything. If someone could please just tell me how to download files to it that would be great.

For Windows XP and WindowsVista, you do NOT need any software drivers from any disks. Just plug the USB cable in and it will work. The small CDR media is for Windows 98 and earlier to help with USB recognition.

Connect it to your computer through the USB cable, it should be a A/B connector, so plug the square end into the HDD and the rectangular end into an open USB port.
