Convert internal to external hard drive?

March 16, 2010 - 7:13 pm 2 Comments

So, I took apart a broken laptop and pulled out the hard drive. I bought this case from amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Aluminum-External-Enclosure-Capacity/dp/B000FNBYKW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1268429966&sr=8-3
The connection to the case has a bunch of holes, but the hard drive has like a strip with contacts, not pins. Am I missing something? How can I get this connected?

You bought the wrong type of enclosure. You needed a 2.5" SATA enclosure. What you bought was 2.5" IDE. I suggest you return that and buy this: http://www.amazon.com/SATA-Hard-Drive-Enclosure-500GB/dp/B001AAVA08/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1268430370&sr=8-1

Does anyone know of an external enclosure that supports multiple harddrives?

March 14, 2010 - 4:39 pm 1 Comment

I have 6 160GB drives sitting around collecting dust. They are IDE drives. I am looking for an enclosure to hold 2 or more of these that connects to the comp via usb 2.0 preferably. My motherboard has firewire capabilities but i dont feel like running the wire to the case so prefer usb 2.0. Any help or links would be great or does anyone know a way to use my current usb to ati bridge (external case) and use 2 or more drives at once on that? Im not looking for it to combine them into one drive. I want them each seperate.

Mitsubishi USED to be the top television brand. I have one that still works great from years ago.

But they dropped the ball with HDTV.

Their first DLP television was priced at $9,999 - many times more than others.

For many years they made televisions w/o support for 720 - one of the defined HD standards.

They original had something called "The Promise" where you could buy the early generation of HD televisions and Mitsubishi promised to offer an upgrade-module for $300 to make it compatible with changes to the HD spec - but many people got screwed over when they failed to come through.

So … this is why that unit is so cheep. Mitsubishi is not well respected anymore and few stores carry them. Sony, Samsung, Pioneer and even Panasonic are better respected and considered more reliable.

Hard Drive Enclosure for PS3 Drive Replacement?

March 8, 2010 - 6:13 pm 1 Comment

My friend and I were planning on upgrading our PlayStation 3s by backing up all the files to an external HDD, as every video tutorial explained. However, we found that it may be cheaper, faster and easier to use a Hard Drive enclosure: basically an aluminum box where you place the HDD inside, and connect it to a SATA-to-MiniUSB connection. Although the question is:
If I place the old 80GB HDD into an enclosure, will I be able to restore the files onto the new 500GB drive, or will I have to do a back up to another, blank external hard drive prior to the replacement?
Thank you for any replies, helpful or not.

Where to get a plastic snake bin?

March 8, 2010 - 6:13 pm 4 Comments

I currently have my ball python and dumerils boa in plastic sweater bins, they work great, very easy to clean, light weight for moving, retains heat and humidity very well, they are both growing and i need to upgrade to a permanent enclosure, i want to use the same type of enclosure but i cannot find a plastic bin big enough, im looking for one about 4 feet long and 2 feet wide mine are currently 3 feet long and 18 inches wide, i went to walmart and target and couldnt find one any bigger, any idea where i could get one? a store or online? This is a pic of what a plastic bin looks like

mine are not as tall and height isnt really a factor.
thanks

Yeah V175. I picked a few fro $25 each this last Christmas from Walmart. These are the Christmas tree storage. ReptileTubs.com carries then year round, but at a higher price plus shipping. My juvenile boas are in Sterilite 34-Qt ( lime green latches), many would say this is fine for a BP. Your 3ft x 18in will be good for the BP. Sterlite 105-QT(lime green latches) would be good to. Neodesha Plastics makes great cages. These are the only commercial cages I have used, since my parents used to work there, and my wife and some of my family does now. I will recommend Boaphile Plastics too. Though I haven’t bought cages from there I have gotten boas from Jeff, any that have done business with him will tell that customer service is above none.

What are some things to put in a cat enclosure?

March 8, 2010 - 6:13 pm 8 Comments

So i need ideas, but since im a first time cat owner im not to sure what a cat would like or not in the enclosure. So i need some help.
And please answer if you have/had a cat, thankyou :) Uhhhhhhh the enclosure will be out side, so she doesnt hurt the wild life while im not at home.

Something to scratch, something to pounce, something to swat, something to hunt.

Something to snuggle in, something to hide in, something to eat and drink from, and something to destroy.

Each cat has different needs and different ways to spend their time.
Each of the above will hone your cat’s senses in some way or another, or comfort him, or keep him occupied.

Suppose you have a machine which has a very strong magnet inside. You have some computer disks in the room and?

Suppose you have a machine which has a very strong magnet inside. You have some computer disks in the room and, although you think they are far away enough from the magnet to be safe, you don’t want to take any risks. What material would be appropriate for building a magnetic shielding enclosure?

A) aluminum.
B) plastic.
C) iron.
D) copper.

We won’t do your homework for you dude.

how big of a plastic tote should I buy for my RES turtle?

March 6, 2010 - 9:31 pm 3 Comments

and if you own one can you post pics of it and i’s enclosure?

Mines a female, around 6-7inches long. I have her in a tote right now (wasn’t planning on getting it, neighbor was going to chuck her outside). I want to get a bigger tote to put her in but I’m not sure how big I should get. Do they get much larger?
I’m going to get a tote big enough for her, many people house them safely in totes…

The usual bare minimum is 10 gallons per inch of shell. However, you can "cheat" a bit if you have a very low, broad tank, like a wading pool. They’re cheap, too. Anything over 4′ diameter should do for now but get the largest one you have room for to avoid having to replace it.

A question about an external hard drive enclosure (usb type)?

March 6, 2010 - 9:31 pm 4 Comments

Does the drive that goes in it need to be the same power or rpm and GB as the internal hard drive, so as to run correctly?

Is it ok if the external is IDE and the internal is SATA?

Thanks.

makes no difference. Plug it in and use it.

What is the difference between load center vs enclosure?

March 2, 2010 - 10:08 pm 1 Comment

Load center also known as: breaker panels, fusebox, fuseboard, circuit breaker panel, panelboard, consumer unit or CU, load center, power breaker and power panel

I need to know the difference between those and an Enclosure?

Thanks!

An enclosure is basically just an empty metal box that typically has a swing door for easy access and holes on the sides to run cables in and out of the box. You can choose to put/mount whatever equipment/hardware you want inside the enclosure (e.g. network switch) so that it’s out of the way and doesn’t make a mess.

A simple enclosure doesn’t contain any of the fuse/circuit breaker components, it’s just designed to house other equipment (which could include a breaker panel for example).
