How do I hook up an old hard drive using enclosure to my laptop?

February 26, 2010 - 8:25 pm 1 Comment

The drive came from an old desktop and is an IDE (wide grey connector). I have a rocketfish hard drive enclosure.

I was hoping to reformat the drive by connecting it to my laptop then connect it to my desktop as an extra drive.

It’s connected to my laptop using the usb and the hard drive enclosure. Should it show up as a removable drive? How do I reformat it?

yes, it should shows up as a removable drive, you format it by right click on it and choose format.

why don’t you install it a secondary drive on you Desktop then format it?

after installing it, Right click on my computer > select manage> select Disk Management, make sure you are at the correct HDD and format it

again make sure you are at the correct HDD, you have been warned

i am going to start breeding russian tortoises but i cant find a decent enclosure less than 100 bucks?

February 20, 2010 - 10:37 pm 4 Comments

i am planning on having about 3 of them and they need to be inside for the most part i found some good 20 dollar plastic containers but nobody sells them anymore because they are "seasonal items"does anybody have some of those or any other good sizes plastic containers

Hello. Russian Tortoises are very interesting to keep and breed, but plastic containers are not suitable and will cause a variety of health problems in time. Please see this excellent Tortoise Trust article on constructing a Table Top Tortoise Habitat for details on an easy-to-build enclosure: http://www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/Tortoisetable.htm. For more on keeping Russian Tortoises, please see my article at http://blogs.thatpetplace.com/thatreptileblog/2009/06/26/the-russian-or-horsefield%e2%80%99s-tortoise-an-ideal-%e2%80%9cfirst-tortoise%e2%80%9d/.
Good luck and enjoy!

how do I partition a new SATA HDD in an external enclosure?

February 20, 2010 - 10:37 pm 1 Comment

I don’t believe I have any interior SATA cables and am using a new hard drive I just bought fresh out of package. I know I have to setup a partition but is there a way to do it in an external enclosure that I already own(and was planning on using to run the drive)?

I tried plugging it in and firing it up and it recognizes its a Mass storage device but cannot access it.

After connecting external HDD, go to Disk Management in Computer Management in Windows. The external drive should show up in lower right portion of Computer Management window. Right click on the drive and you will have the options to partition and format the drive. Once formatted and assigned a volume label, it should show up in upper right part as additional drive(s).

How to make a cheap water dragon enclosure?

February 17, 2010 - 3:01 am 2 Comments

I am looking to buy a water dragon.
I am looking to build my own enclosure or buy a CHEAP one.
I am on a semi low budget.
Thanks.
I want to make a enclosure for a water dragon.
The enclosure i want is 6-7 feet high 4-5 feet in lenght and 3 feet in depth.
Im not looking to spend alot. I would like to spend about $150-170.
(without the lights, heating and all that)

You can shop on craigslist.org and there people sell things that they don’t need or can’t keep anymore and you can get tanks and animals for free in the pet section.

Is it possible to put stuff in a sub enclosure to reduce its volume?

February 12, 2010 - 10:19 pm 3 Comments

I calculated the volume of my box, and got a number thats over what my subs prefer for a non ported box. In the conquest for better sound, are there any reasonable solutions to reducing the internal volume by adding say…Packing peanuts or kittens?
Volume as in internal space, like leiters, not volume as in db. Just to clarify.

Unless the enclosure is vastly larger than specification, the sound quality may actually be improved as well as an increase in spl. Try acoustic dampening mats, dynamat or even pieces of MDF acting as additional bracing. These will reduce enclosure resonance and "clear" up the noise. Also, the volume your driver displaces must be subracted from the enclosure volume. Hope this helps.

Can a computer (win XP, without SATA support) read data from an external SATA hard disk via usb HDD enclosure?

February 10, 2010 - 5:37 pm 6 Comments

My old PC’s mainboard doesn’t support SATA hdd. I want to take data from an laptop’s hard disk (SATA) via an HDD enclosure (usb port). But when I plug in, nothing happen. I wonder if it is possible?

sata drives in enclosures need more power than the old ide drives and more than a usb port can support even with its own power supply, either get a usb cable with two usb connectors on one end or sometimes plugging the cable into the pc first then into the enclosure works as the power is in the cable and there is less delay in booting the drive

I don’t really want to buy a macbook pro, are there any other Laptops that have the full case that is aluminum?

USB enclosure turns on and off and the computer won’t recognize it?

February 1, 2010 - 12:27 am 1 Comment

I have one of these:
http://www.coolmaxusa.com/productDetails.asp?item=HD-250B-U2&details=overview&subcategory=U2&category=2.5SATA

A USB mass storage enclosure. I’ve been using it for 4 months and I already installed the driver.
Someone in my house dropped it and now, whenever I connect it, it make 4 or 5 skipping sounds and then it turns off.
Then, it turns back on, but the computer never acts like it’s plugged it.
I does make the sound of something being plugged in and out when it turns on and off, but I can’t browse the files.
What would you recommend?
God no… Oh, fuck!

The magnetic needle has scratched the discs on the hard drive. That drive is now dead! Buy a new drive.
