all you need to do is plug the cable into the USB port and the device should auto-install the drivers

What type of sub enclosure is better and why?

What is better for a sub enclousre. Fibreglass, MDF or Plexiglass and why?

I have seen that Plexiglas makes a real buzzing sound when the sub hits because of the thinness. I personally go with 3/4 MDF it makes a real great seal and can take a beating from big subs. MDF boxes just sound the best in my opinion. Never seen a fiberglass one

Desktop Hard Drive Enclosure without having to plug it in?

January 20, 2010 - 7:06 pm 2 Comments

I have an old 3.5 desktop hard drive and am planning on using it as an external hard drive for my macbook using a usb enclosure. The only problem is that desktop hard drive enclosures have ac adaptors and you have to plug it in.
I am looking for one with power through the usb cable or with a battery or something to not make it have to plug in.I am looking for an inexpensive one by the way. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Sorry mate but it’s only 2.5 inch hard drives that can be powered through a USB port, and then it’s not all of them. The power requirements of 3.5 inch drives makes it impractical. That’s why they have an external power source that needs plugging in.

Can I transfer my RAID hard drives from one enclosure to another?

January 20, 2010 - 7:06 pm 2 Comments

Details:
I have a 1 TB storage RAID enclosure, that uses e-sata cables to connect to pc.

I have one light out on the RAID device and was wondering if I need to buy another RAID enclosure and put the harddrives in the new one.

Will this work?

It depends on what type of RAID is being used. If it’s mirrored (RAID 1), then it should work. If it’s striped (RAID 0), it might not. I would just buy the same brand/model of the enclosure if possible. Backup your stuff on it before hand just to be on the safe side.

buying an HDD enclosure?

January 17, 2010 - 10:27 pm 1 Comment

I’m going to be buying an enclosure for a 2.5 inch SATA drive I have spare.

Preferably I’d like one which works with USB and eSATA (or maybe firewire).

I figured I’d check eBay prices and was looking at these ones:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-5-SATA-TO-USB-2-0-eSATA-EXTERNAL-HDD-ENCLOSURE-CASE_W0QQitemZ270494500368QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Collectables_HardDriveEnclosures_RL?hash=item3efaba8610

or this amazon one:

I’ve never used an enclosure before, so any comments or advice before I buy?

any of above will work fine………………….

make sure you "remove usb item safely " , before removing unit.

+ make sure you defrag once aweek if using as back-up device.

enjoy.

can i mount my amp onto my sub enclosure?

January 17, 2010 - 10:27 pm 4 Comments

i have an suv and ther’s really no good place to mount it. and i don’t want it rolling around freely. will i lose any sound quality or have any type of problems? suggestions? it’s a 96 bravada if that means anything to u

Yes you can and it is probably better for the sound quality as the total mass of the box will increase hence reducing the natural vibration frequency of the whole sub unit.

What type of filter is this?

January 17, 2010 - 10:26 pm 3 Comments

I saw one today which is sort of like a sponge filter, you put it underwater and attatch an air pump to it. The diagram showed it attatches the same way but it was in japanese and it’s like a little plastic enclosure with some sort of replacable filter media inside it, which probably works the same way as the sponge does. I just need to know what they are called so i can look them up on the net and find out more about them…
heres what i saw

Oh… Are they more effective than sponge filters of the same size?

It’s just like the old box filters driven by an air pump. This one simply has a more contemporary shape & is meant for small tanks. There’s a small internal airstone that’ll create bubbles that rise from the funnel on top. As you can see from the replacement media, the outside is filter wool with probably an inner carbon sponge.

What is the function of an external HDD enclosure?

January 17, 2010 - 10:26 pm 3 Comments

Is it just like a case for your external hard-drive? Does it do anything extra that the external hdd can’t do without it?
Oh i probably should have wikied this lol.

It has the circuitry in it that enables USB or Esata to power up and run the hard drive, and also provides protection from elements and people with peanut butter on their fingers.

You could run the hard drive outside the case, but you would have to connect it to the cables inside, including the power cable, and then, the drive would just be hanging and in the way.

So the case is not just a case, it has a small circuit board inside and a special plug to match the hard drive (IDE or SATA), so if you bought a case, it would have to match the hard drive plugs, IDE or SATA
And the case makes wiping the peanut butter off easier.

Would you recommend buying an external hard drive, or a 2.5" SATA HD with a USB external enclosure?

for extra laptop storage

What you’re looking to get out of your hard drive should answer this question. The primary question I think is this: what’s more important, portability or price?

If you want something that can still potentially fit in your pocket, go with a 2.5", hands down. I’ve used one for over 5 years now (120GB lol) and it’s been extremely useful for backing up data as I primarily use a laptop. I’m fairly sure they’ve hit TB even in this form factor, but the price will definitely be higher than that of an external hard drive.

As for external hard drives, they are certain to be cheaper than the 2.5" ones for the same size, but I believe they require you to carry a power cable. I don’t know if there are new ones out there that don’t require an external AC source, but the ones that I’ve seen do. We keep two of these in the house with the desktops for backup purposes.

Ultimately, I think it comes down to how you’ll use this hard drive. If you want to bring it with you wherever you go, get a 2.5" one. If you want a beast of a hard drive to store everything under the sun (or a lot of HD videos), I’d suggest an external hard drive. The 2.5" drives will be slightly more expensive, but they are certainly worth it in terms of portability.

Hope that helps!

Just an afterthought… depending on how you use your drives, it may not be worth your while investing in the 1TB drives. Since I’m not a traveller away from home for long periods of time, I prefer to have many smaller drives rather than 1 big drive. For daily use, I usually carry a 16GB memory stick instead of a hard drive. That way if I lose it, it’s significantly cheaper to replace and less data is lost. If I need more than that, I take a 60GB 2.5" drive before the bigger ones for the same reason. It’s convenient having 1TB with you at all times, but it’s also a huge hassle if anything happens to it.
