is it safe to cut into a car’s firewall to build two enclosures for two JL Audio 8 inch subs?

September 25, 2009 - 10:20 am 3 Comments

theres room in the engine bay but is it safe?
Not a problem. Will be using Dynamat inside and out plus welding on sheet metal to the outside then spraying Rhino Liner over it and a 2nd. heat shield over THAT.

yes you can do that in some cars but you have to use some metal shield to protect it from the heat and the water
we did that in a mr2 toyota,pontiac fiero, and a z3 bmw

External HDD enclosure?

September 23, 2009 - 10:12 am 2 Comments

I’ve never had to buy an external hard drive enclosure before. I have a Seagate 160GB SATA drive that I need to connect to my computer. Both SATA ports on the motherboard are occupied, so I need an enclosure that accepts a SATA internally, but connects/works with the computer via USB or firewire. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

In my opinion, this is the best there is.I have one and you can’t even tell it’s running except for the light letting you know it is.

i need a orion hcca sub woofer 10 inch dual custom enclosure?

September 23, 2009 - 10:12 am 1 Comment

i need a custom sub woofer enclosure for 2 10 "inch orion hcca , can anybody please help me.

If u need a custom enclosure u should go see a local car audio place because most of the good ones deal with a woodworker who builds custom ones. Most of the enclosure that u see online are decent but aren’t the best. However a custom enclosure and cost a good amount of money, but remember u get what u pay for.

I recently asked a question about hard drive enclousures. Now, which one is the best?

September 23, 2009 - 10:12 am 3 Comments

I recently asked a question about hard drive enclosures. You guys gave me some great answers and some sites to look at. I did look around but i found TONS of hard drive enclosures. I want one with an instant backup button, aluminum case (no fan), and some lights to tell me if it is working and when it is backing up (optional, i don’t really need this). This is my first time buying an enclosure like this and i need to know which one is the best.
I’m not talking about a external hard drive. I am talking about a external hard drive without the hard drive, an enclosure that acts like an external that you slide a hard drive into it. Sorry for the confusion.

i missed your first posting and you can im back if you wish. would you not be happier locating it internaly? pick up a promise pci to ide adapter card and add up to 4 more drive or drives and roms with 100mb/s transfer for about 10 - 15 $. for a mojor back up for archive, extrnl hdd thru usb is great but flash drives and disks are way cool and dont require power or the space. i use a 1 gig mp3 player. most movies are under 700mb which leaves me unought room for 50 + songs.and if that not enought. i have a2gig flash drive that was only 45$.which is enought for a ton of files pitures and so on…. where can i buy plastic coated hardware cloth in the new york city region?

September 23, 2009 - 10:12 am 1 Comment

i am building a project ( iguana cage enclosure) and need either hardware cloth or plexi glass. measurements for the hardware cloth i need are 1 inch by 1 inch or less the height 7 ft 4 inches , and 6 feet length. the plexi glass could be 1/2 inch or 1/4 inch of the same dimensions. i tried every home depot, lowes, and mom and pop hardware store. searched online found 3 dealers, howver wont sell to me because the minimum order is 500$. so any help will be appreciated. thanks
ps, it doesnt have to be plastic coated and… any other ideas or products out there in the world that might be better i encourage you to reply .

Take a drive to Darien, Ct., exit 10 off 95. Go to Rings End Lumber. Our standard galvanized hardware cloth comes 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2" holes. Buy it by the foot, in stock. Driving to Ct. (30 min.) is cheaper than a $500 min. order.

Anyone know anything about external hard drives enclosure?

September 23, 2009 - 10:12 am 1 Comment

My computer recently stopped working, so I took it to Staples and they said it was essentially dead, but the could retrieve the data and they put it in an external hard drive (an acomdata, 3.5" hard drive enclosrure).
But the problem lies in trying to open it. I’m operating on XP, my computer knows it’s there because when I plug it in it makes a noise, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. It won’t let me install the software because it says I don’t need it.
And the "safely remove hardware" icon was in the tray but when I opened that, there’s nothing there.

Also whatever’s inside is rattling around, is that good?

Does anyone have any ideas, I really want to get my files off it!

Thanks in advance!

First, I would make sure the USB port was working.
Start,
Settings
Control Panel
System
Hardware
Device Manager
See if you can find the port - right-click on it and selece Properties
if the port is working o.k. –

were you using the port for anything else before plugging in the external hard drive?
I found out that that after "safely remove," sometimes the PC will not accept another USB device.

Here is the article on that:
Problem With USB Port – Can’t Reinstall USB Device – Plug & Play Problem
- With Windows Plug & Play feature, Windows is supposed to recognize any device plugged into a USB port — the problem is after it recognizes something once, Plug & Play will never again try to install that device. You need to erase all memory of the device (printer etc) from the computer.
- Right-click on My Computer, cl Properties, click Hardware, click Device Manager.
- Click on the plus sign next to “Universal Serial Bus.” Look for the problem device’s name and right-click. Now Remove. Restart and reinstall.

Personal Notes:
1. I found that if I did not go through the “safely remove” procedure before unplugging a USB device, the computer did not recognize another item. I had to reinsert the first item, “safely remove,” then plug in another item. This must be like shutting down for USBs.
2. Some flashdrives are to be removed at shutdown, and reinserted after startup. This is stated on the literature that accompanied my SONY 1G flashdrive. I do not recall seeing this instruction for my Cruzer 1G, but I suspect it is the same. I found that if I leave it connected, I cannot access files. After removing it and reinserting, files are there. A couple other smaller, older flashdrives do not seem to have this problem.

You may have to temporarily uninstall whatever you were previously using on that port.

Any tips on how to build a rabbit enclosure in the garden?

September 23, 2009 - 10:11 am 3 Comments

I have heard that rabbits are excellent escapologists - please share your experiences and tips on how to build a comfortable and safe rabbit enclosure in the garden.

If you plan to keep your rabbits outside, you might want to reconsider. Rabbits are happier, healthier, and live longer when they are indoor bunnies.
See:
http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/indoorbun.html

If you decide to let your bunnies play outside, you want to be sure that the space is completely enclosed on the sides and on top so no predators can get at your rabbits. You also have to be sure they can’t dig their way out and rabbits love to dig as you know. the top also keeps them from jumping out as some rabbits can jump quite high. Some people will sink chain link many inches into the ground to keep them from getting out. Whatever you do, you should be with them when they are outside to protect them. Also want to be sure that the plants in your garden are rabbit safe as domestic rabbits don’t know the difference between good plants and toxic plants. Here is a comprehensive list of food for bunnies including links to toxic plants:

If they are going to live outside (I hope that’s not the case), you can get some tips on keeping them safe by going to helpful hints at:

How do zookeepers clean out Komodo dragon enclosures?

September 23, 2009 - 10:11 am 7 Comments

without being attacked. I imagine it’s pretty impossible to lure a komodo dragon away to a secure area and they don’t eat very often, so you couldn’t tempt them with food often enough to clean the enclosure. How do they do it????? (apart from "very carefully" :)
i watched a program the other day on a zoo that kept komodo dragons, what they do is go in the enclosure in fours, two people have big boards which they use as a barrier to keep the komodo’s away from the person or they put them inside so they are free to clean with out either upsetting the dragons or getting hurt, hope this helps best of luck

How would I do this with a laptop and a desktop computer?

September 21, 2009 - 12:09 pm 1 Comment

I want to do this. First ill give the stats. The laptop has 1 ethernet, 1 modem, 4 usb 2.0, and an I394 hookup. The Desktop has alot more, Firewire, 6 usb, ethernet, and I think an external sata, but I cant remember, and its hard to look behind it.

Anyways, here is what I want to do

Laptop<———>500gb External Sata<————->Desktop

So basically I want to hook the laptop and desktop to an external hard drive. I know theres some external enclosures that have 2 or 3 different hookups, Usb, I394, and ESata.

The Desktop will have the Ethernet taken up, the Laptop will not. I run the DSL through USB on it, only because my modem only has one Ethernet.

So how would I do this? I want to make it so when I want to go somewhere with my laptop, I just unhook it and go while still being able to access the hard drive with my desktop.

I know its possible, but I have never done it. So, what would I need to accomplish this? (I use Newegg.)

Well, you’re right about the enclosures that have multiple USB or firewire ports, that would work. The other option would actually do more for you than allow the sharing of the external drive. My suggestion would be to get a router. A wireless router would probably be a good idea if the laptop has a wireless card in it. This way you could connect the external drive to the desktop and use Windows sharing to access it with both computers. Read the help documentation in Windows to understand how sharing works.
