ide hd to external?

August 30, 2009 - 3:10 am 4 Comments

im looking to make use of my 20gb ide hdd’s laying around, so my boss has his into external with an external enclosure he bought from newegg, and i decided i would do this too, but i am not sure if i would actually need the whole thing, is it possible to just buy a few wires to do it, ill have it in my computer more than out of it so i would just like to buy a power and ide to say usb or firewire cable so i dont have to unscrew the case to get my hdd out everytime.

or on the other hand do you think it is at risk or static…etc

You need to fit it in a proper enclosure which adapts the ide to usb and back, and uses external power in order to prevent disturbing the machine when connecting. The internal connections are also not designed for continual connection and disconnection.

Using my old hard drive in an external enclosure?

August 30, 2009 - 3:09 am 1 Comment

This one is for all of you hard drive experts out there, I know there are similar questions out there, but I can’t seem to find the right answer.

Basically I’m rebuilding my computer, and am getting a new SATA hard drive to replace the old IDE drive. What I’m wondering is, can I take my old IDE drive (without formatting) and put it in a USB 2.0 enclosure, and still have it functional to work as an external hard drive for transferring data to the new drive.

Yes. Set the external drive to master. You will need to reinstall your OS, but your files will be accessible.

How could I install a freespire linux on an external usb harddrive?

August 30, 2009 - 3:09 am 3 Comments

I took the the hard drive out of a defunct laptop that had freespire on it and put it in an external usb enclosure. When I go to the boot setup screen from the BIOS I can boot up from the hd but because it was installed on different hardware it stalls. I mean I can make it to the freespire load screen briefly. I need reinstall it on this desktops hardware.

I know partitioning is the recommended option but I would still like to know.

Freespire currently uses Grub as it’s boot loader.

Thus you will need to manually alter the parameters
contained in Grub’s configuration file, menu.lst,
usually found in the /boot/grub/ directory. These
parameters are not set automatically, so GRUB is still
looking for your old drive root, and the old path to the
linux kernel. This is why the system hangs. USB
devices usually end up being mounted with serial style
names, i.e. /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, etc, so that is what
you will need to change to in menu.lst.

Assuming you can boot from a USB device with your
mainboard, you could also try re-installing GRUB to
that same USB device. To do that you will need a
workable linux system, so try a ‘live CD’ distro, with
that USB drive attached, in order to give yourself access to the files you need to change, and to the
GRUB bootloader program itself.

Link given below, is an example install to USB device
of Knoppix. May act as a guide to help you.

Good luck!

How do I take apart my enclosure safely?

August 30, 2009 - 3:09 am 1 Comment

I have a dual 12" ported enclosure. I want to take it apart and rebuild it inside of my trunk so it will fit. Could someone provide me with some step by step disassembling instructions to do this?

I tried googling, but to no avail. I need help, quickly.

Thanks in advance.

What you need to do is scrape back the carpet on the box so that you can see the screws and take them out. Generally the boxes are usually glued together, however, so after you have removed the windows or whatever was screwed, you may need to take a hack saw or dremel motor tool and open the panels up. Hope this helps!!!

How can i cool down my reptiles enclosures?

August 30, 2009 - 3:09 am 7 Comments

they are too hot than they are supposed to be and i have tried misting it with cold water and it just gets humid and hot.
please help

Since I don;t know what kind of heating you are using I’ll just go general.

All heat sources should be plugged to a thermostat with a probe. They control the temp by shutting off the mat/lamp or lowering the current. If you do not have a thermostat, order one online (Some can be very expensive, search on Ebay for a good deal or Herpsupply websites. Big Apple Herp has a good selection.) If you cannot get a thermostat, do a visit to a hardware store and get a light dimmer while you save up for a Tstat. If you decide for the dimmer, make sure you get the right dimmer for the wattage of the heat source you are using!

Moving your lamp away from the cage (if you have one) or getting a smaller wattage might help too.

#886 - Ultra Stackables Video Review

August 29, 2009 - 4:16 am 25 Comments

“The Ultra Stackables offer a number of different models to choose from. There’s a 7 port USB2 hub, card reader + 6 port USB2 hub and three 3.5″ HDD enclosures. The HDD enclosures are available in USB2, SATA, and Firewire models. As the name suggests, they are all stackable, but also can be used individually and positioned horizontally or vertically. They even have a180-Watt Multi-Outlet Power Center to power all the stackable units. Watch the video to find out more and check out the bloopers at the end.” ~3dGameMan.com
