Over packing a sub enclosure?

July 29, 2009 - 4:26 am 4 Comments

I have to Rockford Fosgate P2 punches in my trunk, and I recently packed my sub enclosure pretty tight, with fiberglass insulation. The subs sound amazing, very low tones and no bad box reverbs. So my question. Is it possible that I may be damaging my subs, because i put as much insulation into my box as i could fit?
so if i ported the sub inclosure letting air get to the sub, but left the rest of the insulation alone would it be alright?

Most sealed and vented enclosures require 1/2 lb. of dampening material per cubic foot of internal enclosure space. For best results it is recommended to loosely fill the material throughout the enclosure avoiding port or vent openings .

You can’t just "port" a box. It must be built to the specs of the sub for porting.

Why isn’t my hard drive enclosure working with my hard drive?

July 29, 2009 - 4:26 am 3 Comments

I recently purchased a Sabrent 2.5" USB 2.0 to IDE/PATA Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure by recommendation of HP, but I can’t get it to fit with my hard drive. All of the tech reps say it should, but I can’t seem to get it across to them that IT’S NOT WORKING! What am I doing wrong?

Uh, well, you said you bought a 2.5" hard drive enclosure, but are you using a 2.5" hard drive, or a standard 3.5" hard drive?
Hard drives for desk top computers are 3.5".

If you’re just saying that the enclosure won’t work, then here’s the standard method of connecting an external hard drive box to your computer:
1) Look in the back of your hard drive and set the plastic jumper onto the ‘MA’ or ‘Master’ pins.
2) Connect the small EIDE cable and power connector to the hard drive.
3) Connect the USB cable and power cord to the box.
4) Turn on the box and connect the USB cable to the computer. If you have an OLD computer, then it might not have USB version 2.0 ports, so you’ll have to buy a USB PCI card and install it into your computer to give it USB 2.0 ports.
5) When you plug in the USB cable, Windows should say that it found a new device and there should be a new small icon in the System Tray (bottom-right corner).
6) In order to save stuff to the hard drive, you have to format it (if it isn’t ready to go already). Double click the My Computer icon on the desktop and you should see a new icon for the external hard drive. Windows should have assigned it a hard drive letter. If there is more than 1 partition on the hard drive, then Windows will assign them hard drive letters too. If you don’t see a hard drive letter, then click the Start button and click on ‘Run…’ Type in ‘diskgmt.msc’ without the quotes and press the Enter key.
You can use that program to create, delete, and format partitions. You should format new partitions in the NTFS file system, not FAT32.

How would i make a 12v rotary switch step down to lower voltages?

July 29, 2009 - 4:26 am 4 Comments

Im looking to make a small box for testing slot cars on, i have a 12v transformer feeding into a plastic enclosure, id like to put a 6 step rotary switch on the box and step down the 12v to lower voltages to test the slot car engine at lower revs.
thanks for your help

r_wand is correct use power resistors

The motor have a resistance of about 75 ohms and a power rating of about 3W

You should look to switch in about 2V steps, therefore you need 5x 75 ohm resistors wired in series, with the rotary switch moving down the tappings

1W resistors should be sufficient

What kind of replacement power adapter do it need for an Ultra External Hard Disk Enclosure?

July 29, 2009 - 4:26 am 1 Comment

I have an External Hard Disk Enclosures made by Ultra. I’ve searched their website looking for information about a replacement power adapter. I’ve come to find out it’s the standard watt and amp as my other power adapters, but my other power adapters for the other external cases do not state any of the information.

The other external cases are a Hammer and 2 other unknown brands.

Basically all I need if that 1 (or 2) person to look at their adapter and copy the information listed on the plug.
I NEED A REPLACEMENT. I DO NOT WANT TO CONTINUOUSLY SWITCH BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE POWER ADAPTERS.
any other ideas?

if the plug fits .. if the voltage is exactly the same .. and the wattage and amps is the same or higher it will be fine …

IDE to USB External Drive Enclosure Problem?

July 29, 2009 - 4:26 am 3 Comments

I purchased and IDE to USB drive enclosure for a 3.5 inch IDE drive. I plug it in, with it’s external power source as well, and the device shows up in the tray. It says the drivers installed and the device is ready to use. However, it doesn’t show up in the computer window (My Computer in XP, I happen to have Vista). In the device manager it shows up, and says its working properly. Any ideas?

I would guess you need to adjust settings on your basic input/output system. (CMOS).

wiring my subwoofers and amp?

July 29, 2009 - 4:26 am 2 Comments

hello, i am buying two rockford fosgate subwoofers (Rockford Fosgate P210D4)

Injection Molded Parabolic Polypropylene Cone
2" Aluminum Voice Coil Former
60oz Double Stacked Motor Structure
Optimized for Small Sealed and Vented Enclosures
250 Watts RMS/500 Watt Peak
Mounting Depth 5.6"

i am going to hook it up to this amp(Pyramid PB738GX )

500 Watts x 2 Output
1000 Watts x 1 Bridged Output
Variable Hi/Lo Electronic Crossover Network
Variable Bass Boost
Variable Input Level (Gain) Control
Power ON LED Indicator
Protection LED Indicator
Remote Bass Boost
Hi/Lo Impedance Input
Blue Light Illumination Top Cover
Thermal / Overload / Short Circuit Protection
Anti-Thump Turn-On
Dimensions: 2.4′ H x 10.8′W x 12′ L
Pyramid 1-Year Warranty

i was wondering what the best way to wire them would be, series, parallel, or bridged. could you please tell me which one would be the best, and exactly how to wire it.
thank you very much

Bazooka tooth— his subs model number ends in D4 which usually means dual four ohm coils

So, wire the subs in a parllel/series or series/parallel config, and "bridge" the amp.

And while you are at it, start saving for a new amp. Pyramid is junk flea market equipment, that thing probably doesnt even put out 500 watts. They are not reliable and blow much more often then a solid brand.

What is the best way to clean my tub enclosure to make it look like new?

July 29, 2009 - 4:26 am 4 Comments

Tell me how to really clean my fiberglass tub enclosure to make it look like new. It has a bad buildup and trying to clean it with vinegar has streaked it bad. It is a mess Will anything make it look like new. I don’t want to use a kit to redo it.

use car wax remover and then reapply carnuba car wax as a top coat. Your suppose to wax them yearly to keep them looking new.

Why do people put towels or blankets in their enclosures?

July 29, 2009 - 4:26 am 4 Comments

My friend just got some subwoofers installed into his car, and as i was looking at his box, i realized he had put a towel inside his box. Do you recommend putting towels inside enclosures? and why do people do it?

Towel and blanket is a pretty hoaky way to add fill/stuffing. Most home speakers have "poly fill" or polyester fiberfill in them. Most pillows are stuffed with this stuff. Q-logic car sub boxes comes with a roll of it.

Back in the old days, speakers had wall insulation in the speakers. I actually prefer this for fill, but Im sure the glass fibers and asbestos was bad, and the main reason they stopped using it. Especially in a vented design, where the fibers would easily be blown out.

It makes the sub "see" a bigger box by slowing down the sound waves inside the box. Some say it affects the sound quality too, but that might be subjective. You can get it online, or better yet arts and crafts stores

Also noted, that many speakers have used open cell foam panels lining the enclosures too.

Hard Drive Swappable Enclosure Question…….?

July 27, 2009 - 5:27 pm 2 Comments

I am looking for a specific hard drive enclosure. I really like the sleak appearance of the Vanec EZ Swap. Plus I want my hard drive to be using an empty 5.25" bay in my tower. ( http://www.vantecusa.com/p_mrk200st.html ). This is what I want though. I want to be able to take the Hard drive out of the tower and be able to use a firewire, usb etc. on any other computer that I take it to. Then, when I am finished, I can slide the hard drive back into my tower and lock it up. I can’t find one that has the usb and firewire connections on the back after I take it out of the tower. I also want tit to have a digital display on the front. is there anything like this?

Thank you everyone for your help.
I did some research and I found a sata to usb adapter cable I can use. That may work. what do you think???? http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-to-IDE-SATA-Serial-ATA-Hard-drive-Adapter-kit_W0QQitemZ150168721751QQihZ005QQcategoryZ41994QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Never seen a removable caddy with USB on back, as that would mean builting a USB to IDE/Sata controller into a box not much bigger than the bare drive, so I suspect you’re out of luck.

Mind you USB 2 drives are quite quick now, I like the Western Digital MyBook model for being quiet with good appearance and performance

Will a trunk mounted cd changer work properly next to an 1100 watt sub enclosure?

July 27, 2009 - 5:27 pm 2 Comments

I want to put a cd changer in my car but im worried that the vibration will ruin it. Hell, My head unit skips at high volume. It seems stupid to put one in the trunk next to a bass machine.
Any ideas? Can I mount it under the seat or something.

there is 12 woofers in my truck and about 5 feet away there is 1 alpine 12 disc CD changer

it never skip
