Can a sub enclosure be made out of tempered glass 15mm thick? Will the glass affect sound quality?

June 28, 2009 - 11:27 pm 5 Comments

The glass can measure from 4mm-19mm thick. I want to make an enclosure entirely out of this tempered glass. This will be clear glass. So i plan to put a neon inside if possible. Will this glass enclosure be able to withstand the pressure of a 12" sub?

Just put the word PLEXI in front of your material and you're set. Drilling, cutting, bolting and making anything structural and you're talking PLEXIglass - easy to find in all colors and thicknesses - but cutting plexi is tricky. You'll need to know saw type, blade and speed/rpm or you'll crack it or melt it - been there, done that

You don't give enough information, but let's go from here.
One of the most versatile and elegant structures that you can add to your home is a sunroom. Depending on the size and features you want for your sunroom, you can expect to pay between $4,000 and $18,000 or more. For example, a 6’ by 6’ sunroom will cost you around $4000 and a 6’ by 20’ room will run you around $8,000. You should expect the average cost of your sunroom to be in the neighborhood of $75 per square foot. Also, be sure to check the local building codes to ensure you have the correct permits before you begin your project.

How can I form a clear plastic, acetate or acrylic, to make boxes to enclose collectibles?

June 28, 2009 - 11:26 pm 3 Comments

I got lots of old toys (dolls, cars, action figures) big & small collectibles which I would like to preserve in clear plastic enclosures. These items if enclosed, would be kept from dust and insects, and would give them a longer self-life. These would also serve as decorative piece, can be displayed in your living or bedroom or somewhere inside your home you found appropriate.

You may also wish to purchase acrylic cases in different sizes for your collections.

Where can I find a nice external enclosure for an ATA-6 Laptop HDD?

June 28, 2009 - 11:26 pm 2 Comments

Am I able to use a SATA or IDE external enclosure to create a USB external HDD? Newegg has both of those types of enclosures but no ATA-6 enclosures. I pulled/replaced a laptop's hard drive recently and it turns out the drive wasn't bad, so I want to use it as an external. If I can't use either, does anyone know where I could find a nice external enclosure?

I am also using SATA external enclosure to create a USB external HDD.

I got it from >>> http://www.mdofpc.com/

They provide me great service. You too try there. It's really needy thing today.

How to safely remove an hard disk in a usb enclosure?

June 28, 2009 - 11:26 pm 1 Comment

I used the safely remove feature in winxp, but my hard disk is still ON and there are still sounds. Will it be safe to just plug it out or switch it to OFF at the back of the enclosure? Is this the same thing happening in my pc during a shut down?

just pull the usb plug out; dont bother with the safely remove crap, seriously. (i do this all the time and use them all the time for the past 5 years and have NEER had a problem). anyway yeah you can just shut the hdd off. if it's independantly powered (plugged into the wall) the computer cant shut it off.

How can you control a 12 volt DC fan to go on when the temperature gets hot?

June 28, 2009 - 11:26 pm 4 Comments

I want to install a small 12 volt DC fan inside weather enclosure (containing a security camera) to protected it from the summer heat. I want the fan to automatically turn on at 95 degrees to help ventilate the camera. I can only think of installing a thermostat from an air conditioner unit inside the enclosure. Is there a better way. I have visited electronic suppy stores and can’t find anything that would help keep the camera cool. (I have only heaters for these units).
Any suggestions?

your idea of a thermostat is the best option, use standard mecury switch thermostat supplied by 12 volts to the contacts and wire them in series with the fan. I did the same thing for my storage building except i had the 12volts turn on a relay, and it activated an exhaust fan.
thermostat= about 20 bucks

What is the network enclosure called in my condo?

June 28, 2009 - 11:26 pm 1 Comment

I have a closet that contains an enclosure that houses all of the low voltage wiring in the house. I want to add a second one and run more wires. What is that box called?
No, not the circuit breakers. The box has all of the cable TV wires and the ethernet and phone cables. They are terminated in there and it is neat.

do you mean your electric panel where all of your circuit breakers
are?

does anyone know of a site that sells good empty home subwoofer enclosures?

June 28, 2009 - 11:26 pm 2 Comments

i just bought some home theater subwoofers from my friend but i have no enclosures for them does anyone knoe of a site that sells empty home subwoofer enclosures for good prices?

When dealing with low frequency drivers it is very unlikely that you will find a generic subwoofer enclosure for home audio. Low frequency—including subwoofer—enclosures are designed for each specific low frequency driver model.

In order to obtain the proper enclosure that will yield the best performance for your (subwoofer) drivers will require either the brand and model number(s) or the Thiele-Small parameters for your drivers. Any respectable manufacturer of low frequency, moving-coil transducers (aka drivers) will publish Thiele-Small parameters for their transducers. (In the rare case when a manufacturer fails to publish the Thiele-Small parameters you may still be able to obtain the parameters by measuring the drivers yourself. If you want or need to learn how to do this you should obtain a copy of Vance Dickason’s “Loudspeaker Design Cookbook.”)

If you are lucky enough to find a ready-made subwoofer enclosure, and/or eschew using the Thiele-Small parameters, then the only remaining option is to utilize a closed box / infinite baffle enclosure (design) of sufficient volume and tweak the ‘effective’ enclosure volume by varying the quantity of acoustical damping material inside the subwoofer enclosure. Below I’ve provided a few sources for custom loudspeaker enclosures that may be useful for you.

You should also consider searching for a local custom cabinet or woodworking shop that is capable of fabricating the subwoofer enclosures you need. Also check with your local trade schools and technical colleges - they often offer inexpensive services to the public. Finally, contact your local pro sound dealers – they occasionally deal with custom loudspeaker enclosures; if not they may be able to help you find a shop that makes custom loudspeaker enclosures.

(Note: it is unlikely that these enclosures will work for any drivers other than Dayton brand drivers.)

(Madisound, one of the largest DIY loudspeaker component and parts suppliers on the planet used to sell its own “Woodstyle” brand of loudspeaker enclosures but has since discontinued this part of their business - most likely due to lack of demand and rising costs.)

Anyone know of an inexpensive 2.5" Sata Hard Drive Enclosure with Firewire?

June 27, 2009 - 4:40 pm 1 Comment

I bought my MacBook early this year and I bought an 80GB hard drive to replace the 60GB. I'd like to turn that 60GB into a portable with an enclosure, but I'm having trouble finding a decent priced one with Firewire interface capability. Well, I found one, but it was $99… way too much. I'd like to find one that was $30 or under. There are plenty of USB interface enclosures, but I'd really prefer Firewire. Thanks for the help!

What happens when you buy a sub enclosure that is smaller than recommended?

June 27, 2009 - 4:40 pm 3 Comments

I ordered a dual 10" enclosure. And the description did not say the volume and when it came in it said .75 volume. My subs needs 1 cubic feet of volume in a sealed enclosure. Will this affect the sound quality?
1 cubic feet is recommended, not needed

if 1 cubic foot is the minnimum i would send the box back because i cracked a box due to the fact that it was to small for my sub but if 1 cubic foot is the maximum volume recommended you should be perfect.
